5 Steps to Transform a Job you Loathe into One you Love

5 Steps to Transform a Job you Loathe into One you Love Most people experience periods at work when they feel bored, frustrated, restless, or otherwise turned off by their chosen occupation. If such a period should arise, a perfectly valid option may be to consider quitting the job. Maybe youve always wanted to go into business for yourself, or feel drawn to another career path. But given the uncertain nature of the current job market and the ups and downs of self-employment, you may decide to stick it out with your current employer for a while longer to landsee if your situation will improve. For those people on the cusp of deciding whether to bolt or soldier on in your current position, take a look at this list of actions to take that may help make things more bearable. 1. Before simply going gently into that good night (of temporary unemployment), approach your boss and ask about finding ways t o alter the kind of work you do. Depending on the cause of your discontentbe it overwork or lack of challengeyour boss will probably see that you will be more productive doing something different and is more likely to choose to work with your needs than simply see your talent moved elsewhere.2. If your routine simply needs a refresh ask to be partnered with different people, even if you personally like your current coworkers. By adding a new set of ideas and experiences to your regular assignments you may see your job from a fresh perspective that allows you to reevaluate your relationship with those parts of your job that you may hate and renew your enthusiasm for your work daily routine.3. Change up your surroundings so that your workspace feels more homey and relaxing. You dont want to feel like youre in prison for 40-plus hours per week staring at the same humdrum desk and wall space. Spruce up your area with as much personality as your employer allows. Bring in sentimental phot os, decorations, or pleasant smelling plants. If the setup of your chair or desk makes you physically uncomfortable, ask your manager about changing your furniture or receiving assistance with properly adjusting your office necessities.4. One of the most demoralizing aspects of any office job is seeing your inbox full of unread emails and your desk covered with unexamined documents. Plan at least one session during your week dedicated solely to sorting through your backlog, organize your workspace, and investigate ways to use your workspace in a more systematic, efficient way.5. One way to improve your outlook at work is to live a fuller life at home. Many times, you may end up resenting your work time because it impedes your ability to do the things that you want to do. Make aya you are spending your off time with people you care about and doing things that invigorate your life. Scheduling times of calm can also help you unwind so that you can stay more relaxed at home and at work.

Does your coffee obsession aid your genius or hinder it

Does your coffee obsession aid your genius or hinder itDoes your coffee obsession aid your genius or hinder itThough it would stand to reason to characterize any dietary comparisons with that of the late Vincent familienkutsche Gogh as less than charitable, when it comes to his well-documented love of coffee-youre in good company. The likes of celebrated polemicist Voltaire, renowned composer, Ludwig Van Beethoven and novelist Honer de Balzacwere all said to have possessed a fierce appetite for the Ethiopian import, the excess of which could very easily put your morning Starbucks run to shame. The positive correlations to be made between your favorite genius and their coffee obsessions make them selves known pretty readily these figures were elendhing if not disciplined and prolific. But I wonder if it also speaks to the legacy of instability that invariably accompanies them? Van Gogh for instance, dubbed The Christ Of The Coal Mines by reason of his famed selflessness, was also an ir ascible insomniac. Beethoven was every bit as boorish as he was brilliant, Atwood was a perpetual self-doubter and I dont know that very much needs (or can be) said about Voltaire on the topic of cordiality. Before you throw your punch cards away, I should clarify my answer to be a tentative no. There are, however, lessons that can be taken from these madmen and their toxic relationship to coffee that can be applied to your likely less chaotic workspace. When does coffee get in our way?Sleep deprivation, coffee, and tunnel vision is not a prescription for a productive day. As it pertains to focus it might be helpful to view coffee as a tool as opposed to a steroid. A balanced diet, a healthy sleep schedule, and a well-adjusted mind should be doing most of the leg work while youre on the clock. When acting as a lone agent coffee tends to aggravate our worst impulses. This can mean loudening the innerhalb voices that implore us to obsess over every insignificant detail, deadening the one s that beg we revel in reason and introspection or ensure we morph into fast-talking, jittery pariahs. Anxiety is the enemy of any fruitful endeavor but a favored companion of caffeine.Racing thoughts belie the impression of progress. when they in truth bid your mind a nest of soft-frenetic ideas think a conveyer belt in a Charlie Chaplin movie. Its important to remember, caffeine is a blunt instrument. Along with dopamine and serotonin, it also triggers neurological responses that are better suited to assist you in a cage fight as opposed to reaching your deadline before noon. A level head makes for a more efficient worker in addition to a more agreeable one.In some sense, coffee has robbed us of our tenacity. Its not uncommon for sorry, havent had my coffee yet to follow a social blunder or your cashier giving you the wrong change. Johann Sebastian Bach, another historical coffee addict, once said Without my morning coffee Im just like a dried up piece of roast goatCoffee has even beenattributed to Napoleons conquer of Europe. You dont need coffee to be great. You can be a capable, talented generalist that occasionally wakes up a little groggy. As a crutch any benefits coffee affords us are instantly negated. If youre like me, you might find yourself drinking the stuff before starting any and every project-be it 7 a.m, 6 pm, or midnight. Its one of the many ways we seek consistency on unstable ground. As long as I have my cup of coffee, success is that much more of a given. I think on some level the great thinkers of our time sought a similar reprieve from coffee a cocktail of adrenaline and validation.Recognizing coffee as the totem of courage it is isnt on its own harmful but I think its important to maintain a sense of self and your capabilities.Routine, confidence and an optimal youEdward Abbey was right to say America runs on coffee (yes, before Dunkin). Its become a portent of a successful day. A cup of coffee, a bagel with locks and the morning paper is the new age version of sacrificing a lamb for rain. And rightly so.Routine is imperative, so long as you dont lose yourself in the process. As far as performance enhancing drugs go you could certainly do much worse. In fact, even its detractors must yield to new studies that suggest coffee may aid in preventing the onset of Alzheimers and several types of oral cancer. It can be a useful drug that doesnt operate well in concert with indulgence adrug that in some part contributed to Van Goghs gastro torment and kept Benjamin Franklin up at all hours of the night, sure but useful nonetheless.Be wary of allowing external things to become synonymous with an optimal you, especially at the expense of your mental well being.Dont hesitate to pay your favorite barista a visit before you head into work, but just know youre still every bit as qualified on the days that you dont.

6 Ways to Turn Procrastination into Productivity

6 Ways to Turn Procrastination into Productivity 6 Ways to Turn Procrastination into Productivity Nearly all job seekers have the occasional day when they just can’t seem to get moving. But instead of turning to daytime television or a Words With Friends marathon when the going gets tough, consider activities that provide a breather, turn procrastination into productivity,  and offer the possibility of actually helping your job situation. Here are six ways to turn procrastination into productivity: 1. Try exercise. All those hours in front of the computer may be taking a toll on your body. A brisk walk, a yoga DVD, or an hour at the gym may boost energy and eliminate those neck and back aches that make sitting still so difficult. 2. Organize your space. Clutter inhibits focus, so clean up your workspace. You’ll spend less time hunting for things when you do return to job search activities, and the tidiness itself may lure you to sit down and stay a while. 3. Get social. Connections remain a primary way of finding positions, yet job seekers often overlook networking in favor of solitary activities such as searching job boards. Loneliness might  be at the root of your procrastination, so seek opportunities to be around others. Invite a former coworker to lunch. Research meet-up groups of interest in your region. Explore community service opportunities- employers love to see volunteer work on a resume, and you’ll make new acquaintances. 4. Indulge your inner gamer. Check out Habitica, a fun app that rewards productive behavior (such as sending out a certain number of resumes) and issues consequences for procrastination. Join a community of fellow job seekers for extra support and accountability. 5. Make an inspiration board. Use Pinterest or a good old-fashioned bulletin board to produce a visual reminder of your dreams. Fill it with inspiring quotes, reminders of why you do the work you do, people you admire, things you’d like to buy  anything goes! Not only can the act of creating it help you focus, but also you’ll have something tangible to turn to on other days when motivation slumps. 6. Take the afternoon off. While it initially may sound counterproductive, a good break may be what you need to return to your hunt with new vigor. Take in a matinee, explore a museum, or see what’s new at your local library. “Allow yourself to have fun,” says productivity expert Mitzi Weinman, author of  It’s About Time! Transforming Chaos into Calm, A to Z. “A person cant and shouldnt spend entire days on job searches.” Start Browsing Open Jobs

Penelope Trunk, a Broken Vase and Honesty Online

Penelope Trunk, a Broken Vase and Honesty Online Penelope Trunk, a Broken Vase and Honesty Online Penelope Trunk is one of my favorite bloggers. Not just one of my favorite careers bloggers, but one of my favorite everything bloggers, up there with the very best writers. If youve never read her blog, it can be a shock at first. Its a shock because Penelope is honest. Brutally honest, all the time. She gives career advice good career advice but always in the context of her own life and her personal problems. Some people are uncomfortable with that. I love it because she always makes me think. In her last post, she describes a marital fight. In commenting later, she added this: I guess what I want to show here is that the people who give advice - the bazillions of them - have problems too. Its just they dont write about them. And I think its weird. I think lots of marriages have broken glass on the floor. But people dont write about it. And I think lots of people who give great career advice find themselves totally lost at times. Shes right of course and her comment made me think, because one of the key pieces of advice I give people when they start using social media is be yourself and be honest. I think that fakery is impossible in our new hyper-connected world, and that ultimately lying or pretending will hurt you and your career. Recruiters do read what you say online now, and theyll only do it more and more in the future. But when I say be honest I dont really mean it do I? Because for most people, total honesty would be an utter disaster. Its not a disaster for Penelope for one reason: she is such a good writer that she has been able to build a career around her totally honest blog persona. What she writes wont hurt her career because what she writes is her career. Chances are that you wont be able to do that. I know I cant. If I filled my blog with my personal problems, youd all leave soon enough. For one thing theyre not as interesting as Penelopes and for another, I couldnt possibly describe them the way she does. And besides, thats not why youre reading my blog youre reading here for career advice, not to learn about my life and thats the difference between Penelope and the rest of us careers experts. So what do I mean when I say you should be honest online if Im also saying you shouldnt share your innermost thoughts with everyone (unless youre Penelope)? I guess I mean that you should be authentically the best, most competent, most engaging version of your professional self online. In the same way that if you attended a breakfast networking meeting you would wear a nice suit and be polite to everyone you met. Were all feeling our way in this new world where so much of what we say is available for others to read and discuss and form opinions on. I used to think I believed in honesty online but now I realize that what I really believe in is edited honesty unless your name is Penelope Trunk.

6 Things Not to Say in a Cover Letter

6 Things Not to Say in a Cover Letter 6 Things Not to Say in a Cover Letter 2Love them or hate them, cover letters are still a very necessary part of a job application. As such, it’s important that your cover letter packs a strong punch that impresses a potential boss to call you for a job interview. But sometimes, your cover letter could be the culprit as to why you don’t get the job. Below are six things not to say in a cover letter- and what you should say instead. Six things not to say in a cover letter: “I’ll accept any job with your company.” Hiring managers are looking for very specific job candidates with very specific job skills and previous work experiences to fill very specific positions within their organizations. By stating that you’ll take a job, any job, it shows that you are desperate to get hired. Also, a potential boss wants a qualified job seeker who truly wants the position they are applying for, not someone who just wants to get their foot in the door. “I’d like to work for your organization and see where it takes my career.” Employers want to bring on strong job candidates who can not only help take on a role within their organization, but shine in their respective job as well. In short, even though you’re applying for the position, it’s not about you. It’s about what you can do for the company, not the other way around. “I have two beautiful daughters, Sofia and Emma, and I have been married to my husband for 13 glorious years.” So? A prospective employer does not really care about your personal life, only in so far as how it might impact your performance as a worker within the company should you be hired. In fact, adding personal information can actually hurt your job application, since some hiring managers might harbor some sort of bias (and yes, that is illegal). If you’re itching to include some personal touches to your cover letter, you can include those soft skills that hiring managers are always looking for, such as your volunteer work or how you led the PTO at your kids’ school, as they directly relate to the job position you’re applying for. “Please let me know if you have any question about my resumee.” If we’ve said it once, we’ve said it a thousand times. You must spell check and proofread your job application before submitting it. No matter how fabulous your previous work experience is, or how sensational your skills are, a sloppy job application is an indirect sign of a sloppy worker, and will ultimately get tossed in the trash. If you’ve read (and reread) your job application so many times that you can recite it, ask a friend or family member with a fresh pair of eyes to review it for you for any potential errors. “I’m applying for the _______ position. I’ve attached my resume for your consideration. Thank you.” A cover letter is just that; a letter to your potential boss. At the very least, your cover letter should have a couple of paragraphs that detail why you are the perfect candidate for the job. Making your cover letter too short is a sign that you a) don’t want to write a detailed cover letter, or b) don’t know how to write a cover letter. Either way, it’s not a good sign to a potential boss. So even if it pains you to write a cover letter, take the time to write a really strong one, and then modify it as necessary depending on the jobs you’re applying for. “Hello, my name is _____ and I am applying for the ______ position. I believe that I am extremely qualified for this job, and for the next three pages, will show you why I believe this to be true.” Sure, hiring managers don’t want to read a super short cover letter that tells them next to nothing about a potential employee, but they also don’t want to read The Odyssey, either. Ideally, your cover letter should be one page (and one page only), consisting of four paragraphs- an introduction, two paragraphs that relate your experience to the job you’re applying for, and a conclusion. That’s it. If you find that you have a hard time editing yourself, imagine this scenario: if you only had 60 seconds to speak with the hiring manager about getting the job, what would you say? Being forced to be brief can help you narrow down what you should say in a cover letter. It can be hard to figure out what to say in a cover letter. You want to be personal, but not so much so. You want to say not too little or too much. You don’t want it to be about you, and you don’t want to appear desperate. Use the above tips as a guide to help you craft a cover letter that is worthy of a job interview- and getting hired for the position you’re applying for! Readers, do you struggle with what to say in a cover letter? What have you found works for you? Let us know in the comments below!

Heres what workout is best for your personality type

Here's what workout is best for your personality type Here's what workout is best for your personality type People have different personalities. Understanding your personality type will help you find a workout routine that suits you. It can be helpful to strictly stick to the workouts which fit your personality since those ones will be easier to implement. Starting a workout routine that is not suited to your personality type can make you lose interest fast. In this guide, we will help you find out how to find the best workout for you. Introverts Not many people can be described as  complete introverts. Most people fall somewhere in the middle of the introvert-extrovert scale. However, you can follow the introvert workout routine if you lean more on the introvert end. People with this personality type don’t experience a lot of pleasure from social interactions or other external sources of pleasure. Such people can benefit tremendously from regular solo runs. Follow Ladders on Flipboard! Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! These could be done in the streets, in the gym, or at home using a treadmill. The  gym helps you to cultivate a healthy routine, so it could be a great option for introverts who don’t trust themselves to stick to the routine. If you choose to use running tracks, you can travel to remote places where you will not meet many people in your trail. This will help you avoid small talk and other forms of social interaction. Extroverts Extroverts are at the opposite end of the spectrum. They derive pleasure from mingling with people and participating in group activities. A simple way to determine where you lean on this scale is to consider  your preferred activity after work? Do you go straight home to relax as you watch a movie? Or do you first go to a restaurant or bar with your friends? If you answered ‘Yes’ to the second question, you probably enjoy people’s company and do not like to be alone. One of the best workout routines for extroverts would be boot camp classes. These classes usually involve many people, and you will enjoy getting challenged by other participants. Generally, boot camp classes are highly interactive. If you also like competitions, you can engage in the Flywheel classes. In these classes, participants engage in indoor cycling and compare their performance to that of other participants. Architects and intellectuals The architect personality is quite rare. It actually accounts for less than 2 percent of the population. People with this personality type enjoy reading and thinking about complex subjects. They are also known to be very determined, confident, and decisive. If you fit this personality type, you should engage in workouts that have a lot of freedom of movement. The exercises should be flexible in case you want to change it a little. People with this personality will also appreciate exercises with quick movements. One of the best workouts for people with the architect personality is  CrossFit. This workout is more popular with women. If you have never tried it before, you can get revved up with simpler exercises first. You can start by doing as many burpee exercises as you can in a period of 8 minutes. Other simple exercises that can prepare you for CrossFit workouts include air squats, sit ups, push ups, and ring rows. You should try to perform three round of these exercises. Each round should have 10 reps. You are likely to need a personal trainer for these workouts. Adventurous personality Some people find it relaxing and interesting to explore new ideas and places. If this is your personality type, you can avoid gyms and home workouts altogether. Instead, you should consider going for hikes in untouched areas. If you get a good place for your hikes, you are unlikely to even feel like you’re exercising. You can also choose to go mountain biking. This can be done with friends or on your own. An advantage of mountain biking is the fact that it will not wear on your joints. If you want to add a touch of competitiveness to your workouts, you can join an orienteering sport. These sports will test your navigation skills, but they will also help you stay fit as you navigate unfamiliar territories. In the warmer seasons, many people also hold their workout sessions in natural environments. For example, instead of regular yoga, you can try practicing stand-up paddleboarding yoga. If you don’t want to interact with people, you can simply choose to go surfing. This sport will not just help you stay fit- it will also improve your mood. Conclusion Before you start working out, you need to first find out your fitness personality. There are many different personalities. You should first determine whether you are an introvert or an extrovert. As mentioned earlier, very few people fall on the extreme ends of this scale. You just need to determine whether you are closer to the introvert end or the extrovert end. You can then consider whether you have an adventurous personality or an architect’s personality. Some simple exercises on the internet can help you understand your personality. You should always match your workouts with your personality as that will help you stay focused on your routine. Also, you will experience a high level of satisfaction from the exercises. Job Skills You Can Learn First Hand

Job Skills You Can Learn First Hand Job Skills You Can Learn First Hand Skills You Can Learn on the Job Master some new job skills while taking care of business. Choosing your next job opportunity is tricky. Chances are, the job descriptions you encounter list a mix of skills you can confidently demonstrate and job skills you have yet to master. This is particularly true of those first professional jobs after graduation, but the dynamic is often the same for more experienced professionals as well. Otherwise, a new position would offer no room for growth and where's the fun in that? Job requirements listed in the description of the position are a mixed bag. Certain skills are true prerequisites if your job requires a proficiency in Excel or Word, you can hardly show up on your first day and not be able to open a basic file. However, other skills can be learned on the job. In fact, most hiring managers aren't looking for someone who is 100% baked in terms of professional development. They understand that your ability to master a skill comes with exposure, time, and feedback, so they look for basic proficiency and potential, not perfection. Here are some things that you can expect to learn on the job to build your skill set and help with your overall career development. Industry knowledge If you are choosing a job position in the area of your advanced degree (such as biology, chemistry, or accounting), chances are that you have the prerequisite technical qualifications to get you in the door. However, most hiring managers don't have illusions in regards to your practical experience in their industry; they understand that industry knowledge will come with time. The same holds true if you are changing industries mid-career. What can you do to speed up the learning process? Focus on your transferable skills. You can position yourself for a shorter learning curve by forming a network of trusted professionals and mentors that you can approach for career advice and guidance. Reading industry publications can get you up to speed on terminology and hot-button issues. Attending workshops and conferences can be another great way to expand your knowledge and your network. Client services You may find yourself in a direct client-facing or client-serving role, or your client may be your boss or a counterpart in another department. Regardless of the specifics, learning client service skills is a part of any professional assignment. You can get better at client services through every interaction you have, both professional and personal. The best thing you can do is observe. Then, build your personal collection of approaches and techniques that work well for you and practice. Project management Everyone has a certain level of experience managing assignments and projects with multiple moving parts. From group projects in college to coordinating rent payment with roommates, chances are you have had to consider deadlines, communicate expectations, and establish accountability at one point or another. So, the basic building blocks of this skill are already there. You may just need to develop and maximize them. Every company's workflow is different.
